# Filamental
> Spatial documents and planning in 3D. Filamental is a desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux that turns a folder of files into a structure you can walk through in three dimensions. Every node is a document, every connection is a reason, and the whole space stays as plain Markdown files in a folder you choose. People use it for planning, research, investigations, concept mapping, knowledge management and handing complex work to someone else.
Filamental is independent and not venture funded. It's named after the filaments of dark matter that put order into the universe.
## Key facts
- Platforms: Windows, macOS and Linux, as a desktop application. Direct downloads with checksums, and no email, account or form to download.
- Personal plan: free forever. Unlimited spaces, all of Space Studio and Publisher Studio, every node type, all theming and everything AI. 20 nodes per space, with unlimited Bridges between spaces that don't count towards it. Your own backgrounds, from your files or Pexels. Every import arrives whole, however many nodes it makes.
- Professional plan: $120 a year or $12 a month. Unlimited nodes, shared links, updating a link you've already sent, HTML download and presentation mode.
- Every new installation runs on Professional for 15 days, then moves to the Personal plan.
- No account is needed on either plan. There's no telemetry, analytics or usage tracking in the app.
- File over app: what you make stays in open files you own, and outlasts any app, ours included.
- Files: every node is a plain Markdown file with YAML front matter, readable and editable with Filamental closed. Positions and arrangements are stored separately in a hidden `.filamental` folder, so the content never depends on the layout.
- AI: connect the AI you already use. A built-in MCP server gives Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, VS Code, Zed and LM Studio live read and write access to the open space. A companion window takes your own API key for the provider you pick, or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio with nothing leaving the computer. Export for AI saves the whole space as one file to attach to any chat. Filamental ships no model of its own, so every request goes straight to your provider, on your account.
- Folder and document exploration: point it at a folder of `.md`, `.txt`, `.docx` or `.pdf` files and your connected AI reads them into a space of people, organisations, ideas and decisions, with every node naming the documents it came from. The originals are only ever read.
- Sharing: a published link or a single HTML file. A published link is a snapshot you push deliberately, so nothing reaches the reader until you publish a new version. The person receiving it needs no installation, no account and no subscription. Shared content is encrypted on your machine before it reaches our server.
- Layouts: Dark Energy spaces each part of the structure by how connected it is, Layers stacks it by type, a 2D mode flattens it to a readable diagram and back, and Pathfinder lights the route between any two nodes.
- Types: your own node types and connector types, each with a colour, direction and pull, so a relationship carries its meaning in the line itself.
- Imports: open any folder of Markdown as a space, import an Obsidian vault, or turn Mermaid flowchart code into a live 3D structure.
- Obsidian: a free Obsidian plugin renders a whole vault as a 3D physics graph in an ordinary tab, with no account, no node limit and no paid tier.
- Languages: the app runs in eight languages.
