About SeeTheStack
What websites are built with, and the evidence for it.
What it is
SeeTheStack scans websites and reports the tools they run on: hosting, analytics, payments, email, frameworks and more. Every detection comes with the evidence we found, so you can check it rather than take our word for it. You can look up any site, browse technologies by how many sites use them, see what's trending, and watch sites for changes.
How detection works
Each technology has a rule: the script addresses, HTML markers, response headers, cookie names, DNS records or files that give it away. The rules are plain files we review and extend by hand. When a scan matches a rule, we store what matched and where, which is the evidence shown on every site page.
Some signals are stronger than others. A tool's own script loading on the page is near-certain; a link to its website is weaker. Each detection carries a confidence score, and the strongest detections lead each site's summary. Detection still misses things: tools that load only after a click, only for signed-in visitors, or only in some countries won't show up, and a site can change between scans.
Where sites come from
New launches on Product Hunt, sites linked from sites we've already scanned (up to 2 links away from a launch), and any site a visitor looks up. We rescan the busiest sites every 7 days, others every 14 or 30 days, and we record what changed between scans.
Our crawler
Our scanner identifies itself as SeeTheStackBot in its user agent. On each visit it loads a site's homepage (sometimes in a headless browser, so scripts run as they would for a visitor), a few standard files (robots.txt, llms.txt, security.txt, ads.txt) and a few paths that specific rules ask about, then looks up the domain's public DNS records and its registrar. That is one short visit per site every one to four weeks. It doesn't submit forms, sign in or follow links deeper into a site.
If you'd like us to stop scanning your site or remove its page, email hello@seethestack.com from an address at the domain and we'll take it out. If a site names you and you want that removed, use the privacy request form.
