## Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is medical title homologation?
A: Homologation is the official process by which a destination country recognizes a foreign healthcare degree as equivalent to its own. It allows you to legally practice your profession in that country. Bookahospi manages the entire process on your behalf.
Q: How long does the homologation process take?
A: Timelines vary by country. Spain 10-12 months, Saudi Arabia 3-4 months, UAE 3-5 months, UK 5-7 months. With our Express 24h add-on, initial document processing is accelerated.
Q: What documents do I need?
A: Generally you need your university degree (legalized and apostilled), academic transcript, valid ID or passport, and study plan. Specific requirements vary by country. We confirm exactly what you need for your case when your process starts.
Q: Do you guarantee that my title will be homologated?
A: No, and nobody can: the decision belongs to the Ministry. We do not publish success rates and we do not refund if a case is refused. What we do take on is our own work: documentation, regulatory requirements and filing. If your case is not viable, we tell you upfront, before you pay.
Q: What countries do you serve?
A: We currently serve destinations in Europe and the Gulf: Spain, Saudi Arabia, UAE and UK. We help professionals coming from Latin America, Spain, and other regions worldwide.
Q: How much does homologation cost?
A: Prices start at €280 for Spain, €280 for Saudi Arabia, €280 for UAE, €350 for UK. All plans include full document management, sworn translations, government submission, and follow-up.
Q: Do I need to speak the language of the destination country?
A: Language requirements vary by destination: Spain requires Spanish, Saudi Arabia requires English, UAE requires English, UK requires English (IELTS/OET). We provide guidance on language requirements for each country.
Q: Can I work while my homologation is in process?
A: This depends on the country. Some countries allow provisional practice or supervised work while credentials are being processed. We advise you on the specific options available in your destination country.
Q: What happens after my title is homologated?
A: After homologation, we help you with professional registration (colegiacion in Spain, licensing in Gulf countries), and you get access to our job placement platform with 1,000+ verified healthcare positions.
Q: Can I submit my Spanish homologation application myself if I don't have a NIE?
A: No, not on your own from abroad. Spain's Sede Electronica (the government's e-filing portal) can only be authenticated with Cl@ve or a digital certificate, both of which require a Spanish DNI or NIE/TIE — a foreign passport alone cannot generate that login. If you don't have a NIE, you need a representative who does: someone with DNI/NIE, plus a signed authorization and both parties' ID copies. This is a structural requirement of the Spanish e-government system, not a new 2026 policy change. Bookahospi already has representatives with DNI/NIE based in Spain plus local lawyers, so this step is covered from day one when you hire us.

- [UK or Ireland: which route fits you as a doctor](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/trabajar-medico-reino-unido-o-irlanda): Decision guide comparing GMC (UK) and Irish Medical Council (Ireland) registration. A medical degree awarded in the EEA or Switzerland is a Relevant European Qualification (REQ) for the GMC and gives full registration without PLAB; a non-EEA degree takes the PLAB route. Ireland recognises EU/EEA degrees without examination; non-EU/EEA degrees require EPIC credential verification (run by ECFMG) and, in most cases, the PRES exam. Nationality determines the visa, not the qualification.
- [Latin American doctor already recognised in Spain, moving to the UK](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/medico-latinoamericano-homologado-espana-reino-unido): Spanish homologacion does not exempt you from PLAB — the GMC still classes a Colombian, Mexican, Venezuelan, Argentine or Peruvian degree as non-EEA, with or without Spanish citizenship. What carries over from the Spanish file: apostilled degree and transcript, legalised experience certificates and Spanish colegiacion. What must be redone: sworn translation into English and all short-validity certificates. English evidence is a prerequisite for GMC registration, not a closing step.
- [UK specialty training for international doctors](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/residencia-medica-reino-unido-medicos-extranjeros): The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, law since 5 March 2026, prioritises graduates of UK and Republic of Ireland medical schools, plus graduates of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, for specialty training and Foundation Programme posts in England. Graduates of EU medical schools such as Spain, Italy, France or Poland are not in the prioritised group. It does not affect GMC licensed registration or non-training posts (trust grade, clinical fellow, locum), which remain the usual NHS entry route.
### Visa and legal status guides for healthcare professionals in Spain (with Booka)
Every guide includes a "by country of origin" table for Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Cuba, Ecuador and Chile (apostille or legalisation, competent Spanish consulate, criminal record certificate). Immigration procedures (work visa, student visa for the MIR, arraigo, family reunification, renewals, citizenship) are handled through Booka (https://usebooka.com), the credentialing infrastructure for regulated professions. Visa diagnosis: https://usebooka.com/es/visados/diagnostico. All procedures: https://usebooka.com/es/tramites/espana
- [Visa and legal status as a foreign doctor in Spain: the complete guide](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/visado-medico-extranjero-espana-guia-completa): A foreign doctor can practise in Spain through four main routes: a residence and work permit applied for by the hospital (1 year, renewable for 4), the EU Blue Card (minimum salary of 41,356.36 EUR in 2026), a student visa for the MIR or arraigo sociolaboral after 2 years in Spain. Always with the degree recognised and registration done. Related procedure on Booka: https://usebooka.com/es/tramites/espana
- [Coming with a hospital offer: employee permit or Blue Card](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/visado-trabajo-medico-oferta-hospital-espana): With a job offer from a Spanish hospital, the employer applies at the Immigration Office for an initial residence and work permit as an employee (legal deadline: 3 months). You then apply for the visa at the consulate within 1 month. The first permit lasts 1 year and is renewed for 4. It requires a recognised degree and medical college registration. Related procedure on Booka: https://usebooka.com/es/tramites/espana/trabajo-cuenta-ajena
- [Coming for the MIR on a student visa: stay and registration](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/visado-estudios-mir-medico-extranjero): A non-EU doctor with a MIR place enters Spain on a student visa for specialised health training, applied for at the consulate with the place award and the resident contract. During the MIR they are in a stay (estancia), not residence: they earn their salary without a separate work permit, but that time does not count towards citizenship. On finishing, they switch to residence and work. Related procedure on Booka: https://usebooka.com/es/tramites/espana/visado-de-estudios
- [From student or MIR to work permit](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/de-visado-estudios-a-permiso-trabajo-medico-espana): If you completed the MIR or a higher degree in Spain on a study stay, you can switch to a residence and work permit without waiting 3 years: from 2 months before to 3 months after your stay expires, with a contract or job offer, a 052 fee of 10.94 to 16.40 € and provisional authorisation to work once the file is admitted. Related procedure on Booka: https://usebooka.com/es/tramites/espana/modificacion-estudios-a-trabajo
- [Arraigo for health workers in an irregular situation](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/arraigo-medico-extranjero-sin-papeles-espana): A doctor or nurse in an irregular situation in Spain can regularise through one of the five arraigo routes of RD 1155/2024: labour, social, training, family or second chance. The labour arraigo requires 2 years of continuous stay and a contract at or above the minimum wage, costs a 38.28 € fee and allows work from admission of the file. Legal deadline: 3 months. Related procedure on Booka: https://usebooka.com/es/tramites/espana/arraigo-sociolaboral
- [Family reunification for foreign healthcare workers](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/reagrupacion-familiar-medico-extranjero-espana): A doctor or nurse holding a residence permit in Spain can apply to bring their spouse or registered or de facto partner, children up to 26 and dependent parents. It requires income of 900 € per month for two family members (150 % of the 2026 IPREM) plus 300 € per additional member, a housing report and the 10.94 € fee 052. Legal deadline: 3 months. Related procedure on Booka: https://usebooka.com/es/tramites/espana/reagrupacion-familiar
- [Renewing residence and work as a healthcare worker](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/renovar-residencia-trabajo-medico-extranjero-espana): Renewal of the residence and work permit is filed between 60 days before and 90 days after expiry, with the Immigration Office, paying the 16.40 € fee 052. Under RD 1155/2024 it is granted for 4 years. The legal deadline is 3 months and silence is positive. After 5 years of legal residence you can apply for long-term residence. Related procedure on Booka: https://usebooka.com/es/tramites/espana/renovacion-residencia-trabajo
- [Spanish citizenship in 2 years for doctors](https://bookahospi.com/es/blog/nacionalidad-espanola-residencia-medico-extranjero): A doctor or nurse from an Ibero-American country, the Philippines, Andorra, Equatorial Guinea or Portugal can apply for Spanish citizenship after 2 years of legal, continuous residence (art. 22 of the Civil Code). Residence permits count; study stays and the MIR do not. Fee 790-026 of 104.05 EUR, CCSE exam, legal deadline of 1 year and real processing time of 12 to 24 months (March 2026). ## UK and Ireland: registration routes for doctors
Q: Do I need PLAB if I am a Spanish doctor?
A: No. A medical degree awarded in Spain is a Relevant European Qualification (REQ) for the General Medical Council, and that route gives full registration without PLAB. PLAB applies to degrees awarded outside the EEA and Switzerland. A Spanish doctor still needs to evidence knowledge of English and pass documentary verification. What changed after Brexit was automatic recognition of specialist qualifications, not the route for the primary medical degree.
Q: Does a Spanish doctor need an exam to work in Ireland?
A: No. The Irish Medical Council recognises medical degrees obtained in the EU or EEA without examination, so PRES does not apply. Formal IMC registration, a complete documentary file and language evidence where required are still needed.
Q: I hold Spanish citizenship but studied medicine in Colombia. Which route applies?
A: Citizenship determines the visa, not the qualification. The degree remains non-EEA, so the GMC route is PLAB and the Irish Medical Council route is EPIC credential verification through ECFMG plus, in most cases, the PRES examination.
Q: Does homologation in Spain exempt me from PLAB?
A: No. Spanish homologacion declares a foreign degree equivalent to the Spanish one for practice in Spain. The GMC makes its own assessment and classes the degree by where it was awarded. What carries over is documentary quality — apostilles, legalisations and certified experience — not the route.
Q: What are the GMC routes for a non-EEA degree?
A: The GMC accepts three ways of evidencing knowledge and skills: passing PLAB, holding a postgraduate qualification the GMC accepts, or sponsorship by a GMC-approved sponsor.
Q: Has the UK closed specialty training to international doctors?
A: No, but it has narrowed. The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026 prioritises graduates of UK and Republic of Ireland medical schools, and of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, for specialty training and Foundation Programme posts in England. Non-prioritised applicants can still apply, but posts are allocated to the prioritised group first. GMC licensed registration is unaffected, and non-training posts remain open.
Q: Does the UK Skilled Worker salary threshold rule doctors out?
A: Not in practice. Posts on national NHS pay scales are governed by that scale rather than the general threshold, and the Health and Care Wor
