# Gerty
> The AI that lives on your Mac. Gerty is a private, local AI assistant for the Mac and an offline alternative to ChatGPT and other cloud assistants. It runs open language models (Gemma, Qwen, Llama, Mistral and others) on Apple silicon, so nothing the user writes, says or shares leaves the Mac. No account, no cloud, no telemetry, no subscription.
## Facts
- What it does: chat and writing; answers questions from the documents in shared folders by meaning (PDF, Word, scans and photos, whose text it recognises), naming the file and page it relied on; reads, searches and changes files, editing PDFs in place with their layout kept, and makes PDF, Word and Excel files; works with Mail, Calendar, Reminders, Contacts, Notes, Shortcuts, Home, Music, Safari and the screen, asking before any change; voice assistant in the notch and Read Aloud for every answer, with local neural voices in 31 languages; dictation in German and English; memory kept on the Mac; local image generation; connectors (MCP: Microsoft 365, Xcode, JetBrains IDEs, Affinity, Sketch, Figma, Blender, DEVONthink, Day One); a local OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible API for coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex and aider.
- Models: chosen for the user's Mac from public ratings and installed with one click; any .gguf model from Hugging Face can be added.
- Privacy: the model runs in the Mac's memory. Network use is limited to model downloads, update checks, licence activation, web search while the Web switch is on, and connectors the user switches on; every connection is listed in Settings › Privacy. Well suited to personal and confidential data under GDPR, the Swiss FADP and professional secrecy, because there is no processor and no transfer.
