# Previously this file had per-bot `Allow: /` groups (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot,
# ClaudeSearchBot, Google-Extended, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot, anthropic-ai) listed
# BEFORE the `*` group. Per the robots.txt spec a crawler obeys ONLY the single most-
# specific matching group, so each named bot used its own `Allow: /` group and NEVER
# saw the `*` group's Disallows — the 8 AI bots could crawl /admin, /checkout,
# /account, /auth. Collapsing to one `*` group makes the Disallows apply to EVERY
# crawler (named bots included) while STILL welcoming AI crawlers: `Allow: /` here
# grants them the full public corpus (P01-R08 CC0 cite-mission intact) — only the
# commerce/account/internal routes are off-limits, to everyone.

# RC-7 — ONE sitemap registry. robots references ONLY the index; the index itself
# lists every sub-sitemap (prints + video included via scripts/filter-sitemap.mjs).
# Listing prints/video here too double-registered them (robots AND the index).

# Artifact World Gallery
> A reference catalog of 193,155 public-domain artworks by 28,175 artists, held by 481 institutions represented in the collection.
Artifact World Gallery is a static, openly-licensed catalog of fine-art works in the
public domain. Each work has a canonical record page with provenance, holding
institution, and machine-readable structured data (schema.org). The catalog is a
consumer of museum open-access data; it does not author the underlying art metadata.
## Key facts
- Artworks: 193,155 public-domain (CC0) works
- Artists: 28,175 catalogued artists
- Venues: 481 holding institutions, part of a 5,092-venue museum atlas
- License: all artwork images are public domain (CC0 / Public Domain Mark)
- Canonical domain: artifactworldgallery.com
- Prints: museum-quality, made-to-order, shipped worldwide except the EU and UK
- Last updated: 2026-06-22
The 481 holding institutions above are the venues that currently hold cataloged works.
They are a subset of the wider 5,092-venue museum atlas — a reachability map of every
catalogued venue, including those whose works are not yet represented in the collection.
## Licensing
Artwork images are in the public domain (CC0 / Public Domain Mark) and are sourced from
the museums that hold the originals. Catalog text and structured data may be reused with
attribution to Artifact World Gallery. There is no paywall on the catalog; a separate
made-to-order print store is the only commercial surface.

- Artist record: `/artists/<id>`

- Paginated works: append `/works/<page>` to any hub, artist, or venue URL
## Compare and guides
Honest, balanced comparisons against other art apps and public-domain art sites, plus
use-case guides. Artifact's distinct strengths: 193,000+ CC0 works free to download in
high resolution (no paywall), browse by colour / movement / subject, a 5,092-venue
museum atlas, and a made-to-order print store.

Artifact World Gallery has a companion iOS app (iPhone + iPad) for browsing the same
public-domain catalog: a tap-through tile board for exploring related works by movement,
era, and subject; a lean-back scroll feed; a "For You" feed; offline access to saved
works; and real-world exhibition tracking that alerts you when a tracked work or artist
goes on view near you (a "Plus" subscription feature).
