# Sponkly
> Sponkly lets people who speak different languages talk to each other, each in their own language: end-to-end encrypted chats translated on the device, voice and video calls with live translation, video meetings with live voice translation, and, in the app, Video Studio (videos made again in another language) and Face to Face (one phone translating a conversation between people side by side). 32 languages. iPhone and Android apps, and the web at sponkly.com. ## Translated chats (app, and browsers linked to the phone)
- Everyone writes in their own language and reads in theirs; tap a message to see the original. Messages in the same language are never translated or counted.
- End-to-end encrypted with the Signal-style X3DH key agreement and Double Ratchet (X25519, Ed25519, XChaCha20-Poly1305). Sponkly relays messages it cannot read. Each pair of people can compare a 60-digit security code.
- Translation happens on the device: on the phone, and in a linked browser where the browser translates on its own (as Chrome does), never on Sponkly's servers.
- Photos and videos (videos up to 60 minutes) and documents, each up to 64 MB; programs, scripts and web pages are blocked. Files count against the plan's chat storage (see the table below).
- Voice messages up to 5 minutes: written out on the sender's phone and translated for the reader; "Play in your language" reads one aloud in the listener's language (using the listener's translation minutes, once per message), "Original" plays the sender's own voice.
- Emoji, GIFs and stickers (searched on GIPHY); a message of one to three emoji is shown big.
- View once: text, photos and videos that can be opened one time; the sender sees when they were opened.
- Location, and live location for 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours, end-to-end encrypted (the position is sent while Sponkly is open).
- Replies, six quick emoji reactions, delete for everyone within 48 hours, typing indicator and read ticks, mute a chat.
- Notifications show the sender's name and photo and the kind of message (Photo, Voice message), never what it says.
- Group chats of up to 100 people; creating a group needs a paid plan.
- Find friends from your contacts (phone numbers are compared, never stored); invite others by WhatsApp, SMS, Telegram or email. Block and report.
- Linked devices: up to 4 more devices on one account. A browser links by scanning a QR code at sponkly.com with the phone; another phone, an iPad or a Mac signs in to the app and is approved on the phone. Both screens show the same four digits first. The phone sends the chat history to the new device, end-to-end encrypted.
- Encrypted chat backup (Profile → Chat backup): encrypted with a passphrase only the person knows, kept in their own iCloud Drive or, on Android, a folder they choose such as Google Drive; automatic daily, weekly or monthly, or Back up now; restore on a new phone. Sponkly never receives the backup.
## Translated voice & video calls (app, and linked browsers)
- One-to-one or group voice and video calls of up to 8 people; the most people in a call depends on the plan (Free 2, Starter 3, Professional 5, Business 8, Enterprise 8).
- Each sentence is turned into text, translated by Sponkly's servers and read aloud to the listener in the speaker's chosen voice, with live subtitles, about 1–2 seconds after the sentence. Nothing said is stored. Listeners can switch to the original voice.
- Audio and video are encrypted between the devices (DTLS-SRTP); call set-up is signed with each phone's identity key.
- Calls ring on the lock screen. Calls are unlimited on every plan; a translated call uses the caller's translation minutes, and calls in the same language use none. When the minutes run out, the call goes on without translation.
## Video meetings (app and any browser, nothing to install)
- Everyone speaks their own language and hears the others in theirs, as subtitles and in a natural voice, about 1–2 seconds after each sentence. The number of people depends on the plan (up to 8).
- Meeting chat translated for everyone (each message with its original), files up to 50 MB, polls, raised hands, emoji reactions; screen sharing from a browser on a computer.
- The host admits or declines people in the waiting room, can remove someone and can end the meeting for everyone. Language and voice are set once under Profile → Language & voice and can be changed in the room.
- Every meeting has a password; optional waiting room. Schedule meetings, invite people by email, reminder 15 minutes before.
- Transcripts on Business and Enterprise: every sentence as spoken and as each participant heard it, as Word or TXT, deleted after 30 days.
- Meetings are encrypted in transit and translated by Sponkly's servers (so browser participants can join); they are not end-to-end encrypted. Translation uses the host's minutes.
## Video Studio (in the app)
- Record a video of up to 5 minutes (up to 4K, 4 GB) or pick one from the phone, choose a language, and Sponkly makes it again: subtitles burned into the video in the new language, the spoken one or both, and, where dubbing is offered, a translated voice that sounds like the speaker. Made on Sponkly's servers; a notification says when it is ready; saved to the phone or shared to any app. Videos are kept 7 days.
- For YouTubers, TikTok and Instagram creators and influencers: publish the same video for audiences in other languages, with subtitles that work when videos play without sound. For businesses: product demos, service tours, offers, training and onboarding videos in customers' and teams' languages.
- Paid plans include a number of videos a month (see the table). Each video minute uses 2 translation minutes from the monthly pool (a 5-minute video uses 10), checked before the video starts; a video that fails through Sponkly's fault does not count.
## Face to Face (in the app)
- One phone between two people side by side, each speaking their own language. Sponkly hears who is speaking, shows each sentence and its translation, and reads it aloud to the other person.
- Uses the phone owner's translation minutes: only speech that becomes a translated sentence counts (to the second, at least 1 second per sentence), for both people. Silence and noise are free up to about 3 minutes in a conversation; a sentence that fails to translate is given back. When the minutes run out the conversation stops.
## Account and security
- Two-factor sign-in with an authenticator app and backup codes.
- App lock on the phone with Face ID, a fingerprint or the phone's own PIN, passcode or pattern.
- A list of the devices signed in (the device you use is marked), and sign out everywhere at once.
- Encrypted chat backup in your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive, with a passphrase only you know.
- Payments by Stripe, the App Store or Google Play; Sponkly never sees card numbers.
## Plans
Every account starts on the Free plan; no card needed. One monthly pool of translation minutes covers translated meetings (the host's minutes), translated calls (the caller's), Face to Face (the phone owner's), Video Studio (2 minutes per video minute) and "Play in your language" for voice messages (the listener's). Translated chat messages count for the sender each month; same-language messages are free. When the message allowance is used up, messages are delivered untranslated. Sponkly warns at 80% of the minutes (email, notification) and again when they are used up. Paying yearly saves up to 17%.
