> The IDE for writers — AI-native screenwriting and document tools with version control, inline editing, specialist skills, and Agent Mode.
Inkwell keeps scenes, dialogue, action, revisions, and AI connected in the same writing workflow. Plot is for screenwriting; Canvas is for long-form documents.
Blog posts, help articles, glossary terms and workflow guides in each published language, the screenplay formatting reference and its articles, and the privacy and terms pages are also served as Markdown: add `.md` to the page URL (for example https://www.inkwell.software/privacy.md) or request the page with `Accept: text/markdown`.
## Use Inkwell when
- A screenwriter needs named save points, alternate draft lines, or scene- and dialogue-level change tracking.
- A writer wants AI changes proposed inside the draft for review instead of pasted into a separate chat.
- A screenwriter needs to move between Final Draft FDX, Fountain, and industry-formatted PDF with documented format boundaries.
- A writers’ room or team needs shared structured documents, a record of who changed what, and role-aware collaboration.
- A writer or researcher needs evidence-backed screenplay craft references or private browser-based analysis tools.
## Important boundaries
- The public website provides product information, research, guides, and browser-private tools. Inkwell does not advertise a public developer API or public CLI.
- Product editing, collaboration, AI skills, and Agent Mode require the authenticated Inkwell application.
- Research pages publish Inkwell's original analysis — aggregate statistics, measurements and methods — and name the source behind each figure.
- Private analysis tools process supported files in the browser and are not a substitute for human creative judgment.
## Product facts
- [Products](https://www.inkwell.software/features): Plot is the screenwriter's IDE. Canvas brings the same version control, collaboration, and agentic AI foundation to long-form work.
- [Plot import formats](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/interop): Final Draft FDX and Fountain.
- [Plot export formats](https://www.inkwell.software/pricing): PDF and Fountain on every plan; Final Draft FDX on Writer and above. Production PDF workflows are on Pro and above.
- [Version workflow](https://www.inkwell.software/learn/version-control-for-screenwriters): Save points name restorable moments, draft lines hold alternate versions, and semantic changes compare scenes and dialogue instead of raw file characters.
- [Collaboration](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/collaboration): Pro supports collaboration with up to five people across a writer's projects. Team adds room-scale real-time collaboration, shared workspaces, and role-based permissions.
- [AI review behavior](https://www.inkwell.software/ai): Ghost text suggests the next phrase, Ask answers questions grounded in the draft, Inline Edit proposes alternatives for a selection, and specialist skills return findings or reviewable changes. Agent Mode works a scene or act goal on a separate draft line and returns the result for review. You accept or reject each change, or all of them.
- [Incorporate behavior](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/guides/incorporate-changes): Incorporate previews a whole-document change set and applies it after confirmation. For a focused scene experiment, use a take or Agent Mode.
- [Plans](https://www.inkwell.software/pricing): Free, Writer, Pro, and Team are the self-serve plans, with sales-assisted Enterprise available for organizations. Free includes two screenplay projects, recent version history, up to 20 AI skill passes a month, and PDF and Fountain export.

## Research and private tools
- [Screenplay Anatomy Atlas](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-anatomy): Original aggregate analysis of 2,077 structured screenplays, with empirical distributions for action, scene rhythm, cast arrival, dialogue concentration, and summary compression.
- [Screenplay dialogue & speaking-cast research](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-dialogue): Original aggregate analysis of 994 parsed IMSDb scripts — dialogue-turn concentration, raw versus effective speaking-cast size, dialogue-scene composition, turn length, and adjacent-speaker topology. A second corpus, Cornell Movie-Dialogs, agrees on the median turn length and adds separate exchange-structure, credit-position and credited-gender cuts.
- [Free screenplay dialogue & cast balance tool](https://www.inkwell.software/tools/dialogue-balance): Private browser analysis for Fountain and Final Draft. Measures speaking-character concentration and scene mix against the published dialogue corpus; does not grade dialogue or infer character importance.
- [How long should a screenplay be](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-length): Reader bands, official contest windows, and a private FDX-forward page-count checker that uses MovieSum story words as a planning proxy — not as a measured page count.
- [How much do screenwriters make](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenwriter-pay): Official 2026 WGA floors for covered features, episodes, staff weeks, and High-Budget SVOD residual totals, with BLS Writers and Authors wages and WGA West aggregate earnings for context. A spec is unpaid until a sale, a hire, or a paid option; scale applies to covered work after a signatory buys or hires.
- [Free WGA minimums explorer](https://www.inkwell.software/tools/wga-minimums): Interactive lookup of published Guild floors by deal family and writing step. Not a salary calculator and not legal advice.
- [Screenplay pacing, measured](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-pacing): How a draft distributes its length rather than how long it is — measured action share, scene density, and speaking-cast arrival across ten equal stretches of 2,077 screenplays, plus a browser-private pacing map that places one draft on the same distributions. Measures shape; does not detect beats.
- [Scene Order: A Screenwriting Revision Exercise](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/scene-order-lab): Reorder seven scenes, trace audience and character knowledge, and take a repair checklist into your next revision.
- [Formatting reference](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/screenplay-formatting): The standard screenplay format, measured: the font, the margins and where each element sits. Then format dialogue, montages, title pages and production drafts.
- [Fountain and Final Draft: what survives the move](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/interop): Element by element: what round-trips between Fountain, FDX, and Inkwell, what arrives as action, and what production state does not transfer at all.
- [Submission center](https://www.inkwell.software/resources/submissions): Current official screenplay opportunity requirements, visible freshness states, private PDF review, and application packet checklists.
- [Free screenwriting representation planner](https://www.inkwell.software/tools/representation-planner): Research one agent or manager, assemble a tailored screenplay query, prepare meeting questions, mark unresolved red flags, and export a private brief.
