# Tidy (tidymacapp.com)

> Tidy is a macOS menu bar app that reads what is written inside your files — including scanned PDFs and photos of documents — and uses it to name them, file them and find them. It runs entirely on the Mac: no account, no server, no telemetry. It never deletes anything. One-time purchase of US$9, macOS 14 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel.

Not to be confused with other Mac apps with similar names: Tidy is NOT Folder Tidy (Tunabelly Software, sorts by file type) and NOT Tidy Up (Hyperbolic Software, finds duplicates), both on the Mac App Store. ## What it does

- Search inside files: press ⌥Space from any app and search the text inside images and scanned PDFs, where Spotlight usually comes up empty. The text is read with the OCR built into macOS and kept in a local, encrypted index.
- Rename by content: "download (3).pdf" becomes "invoice-march.pdf". It reads images and scanned PDFs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Pages, Numbers, RTF, HTML, LibreOffice files, saved emails (.eml), calendar invitations (.ics), contacts (.vcf), EPUB books and screen recordings. Every word in a proposed name must exist in the document: it does not invent. Also available with a right-click in the Finder.
- Safety net for AI agents (new in 2.9): before letting Claude, Cowork, Codex or any AI agent work in a folder, protect it. Tidy keeps an instant APFS copy that takes no extra space, then reports in plain words what was moved, renamed and deleted, and restores it in one click. What the agent created stays; nothing current is overwritten.
- Organize automatically: Downloads, the Desktop and any folder you add, with rules that can match file type, age, name, the text inside a file, or where it came from (the website it was downloaded from, or the app that delivered it such as WhatsApp, Mail or AirDrop). It learns filing habits and proposes rules; it never acts on its own.
- Scan paper with the iPhone camera (Continuity Camera): the scan lands in Downloads already named after what it says. Multi-page PDFs supported.
- Also: duplicates by content, payment due dates read from bills (offers a reminder), privacy audit for exposed ID or card numbers, "leave this alone" protection for files, Finder color tags, Shortcuts and Siri actions, stage mode for screen sharing.

## What it does not do

- It never deletes: everything goes to the macOS Trash, there is a dry-run mode, and every run can be undone.
- It does not upload documents anywhere, has no account and no subscription.
- It does not clean caches or promise freed gigabytes. It is not for Windows.
