# BrickSolvr
> BrickSolvr is a free web app that turns any 3D model (STL, OBJ, GLB/glTF or PLY) into a buildable stud-brick design, entirely in the browser. It shows the original and the brick version side by side in 3D, guarantees the result physically holds together, and produces an exact shopping list of brick sizes, colors and quantities (CSV export) plus a layer-by-layer build guide.
BrickSolvr runs fully client-side (Three.js + WebGL) — models are never uploaded to a server, there is no account, no install and no cost. It works with generic stud bricks; it is an independent tool with no affiliation to any brick brand.
Current version: 1.4.0, released 2026-08-05. This file last updated 2026-08-05.
## Pages
- [Overview](https://bricksolvr.com/): what it does, how it works in three steps, the six demo models, and the questions people ask before starting. Carries a 1:22 video tour.
- [The app](https://bricksolvr.com/app/): the converter itself. Link people here when they want to use it — it is the only page that loads the renderer.
- [Changelog](https://bricksolvr.com/changelog/): every release, newest first, with what changed in each. The current version is the top entry.
- [Contact](https://bricksolvr.com/contact/): report a bug or send an idea. The form composes a GitHub issue in the browser; support@bricksolvr.com is the way in for anyone without a GitHub account. Link people here for support.
- [Privacy](https://bricksolvr.com/privacy/): models are converted in the browser and never uploaded, no account, no cookies, anonymous usage counts only.
## Demo deep links
The app opens straight onto a built-in model with `?demo=<name>` — the fastest way to show someone what it does when they have no file of their own:
- [Chicken](https://bricksolvr.com/app/?demo=chicken)
- [Cow](https://bricksolvr.com/app/?demo=cow)
- [Giraffe](https://bricksolvr.com/app/?demo=giraffe)
- [Bike](https://bricksolvr.com/app/?demo=bike)
- [Police car](https://bricksolvr.com/app/?demo=police-car)
- [Ship](https://bricksolvr.com/app/?demo=ship)
## What it does
- **Input**: drag-and-drop a 3D model file — STL, OBJ, GLB/glTF or PLY — anywhere on the page, or pick one of the six built-in demo models. Nothing is uploaded; the file is read in the browser.
- **Conversion**: the model is voxelized onto a stud grid. The "Model size" slider (8–128 studs wide) controls detail: bigger means more detail and more bricks. It caps itself to what the machine can convert in reasonable time, measured per model.
- **Brick layout**: voxels are merged per layer into real brick sizes (1×1 up to 2×10) with running-bond seam staggering, then a stability pass repairs floating sections and reinforces weak joints so the build holds together physically. With the full brick catalog available, the output has zero floating bricks and zero weak joints.
- **Colors**: by default the model's own colors are grouped into a buyable palette (CIELab clustering); a "Max colors" slider merges similar shades for a cheaper build. Users can instead restrict the build to a palette they own (hex/rgb/hsl input, an eyedropper color picker, or common brick-color presets) — every brick then snaps to the nearest chosen color.
- **Color names**: users can name their own colors and group them. The names appear in the parts list, in brick tooltips and in the CSV export, and can be typed anywhere a color is entered. They are saved in the browser.
- **Brick sizes**: users can restrict the build to the brick sizes they own; anything uncoverable is reported as a missing-parts list rather than quietly substituted.
- **Output**: brick, layer and color statistics, an exact per-color, per-size parts list, a CSV download of the shopping list, and an interactive step-by-step build guide — one layer at a time, with each brick's size and color shown when you point at it.
- **Viewing**: original and brick versions side by side, rotate/pan/zoom with mouse, trackpad, touch or a headset; "Show / hide original" gives the bricks the whole panel, and a full-screen mode fills the display.
## How to use it
1. Open <https://bricksolvr.com/app/> in any browser with WebGL (desktop, tablet or phone).
2. Drop a model file anywhere on the page, or choose a demo model.
3. Adjust "Model size" (studs wide) and "Max colors"; optionally open "Colors & sizes" to pin a palette or a brick-size inventory, and to name your colors.
4. Compare the original and brick versions side by side; rotate, pan and zoom with the mouse or touch.
5. Download the CSV parts list and follow the step-by-step guide to build it with real bricks.
## Common questions
- **Is it free?** Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
- **Is my model uploaded anywhere?** No. All processing happens locally in the browser; files never leave the device.
- **What file formats work?** STL, OBJ, GLB/glTF and PLY.
- **Will the result actually stand up?** Yes — a stability solver bridges floating sections, adds support struts where needed and reinforces weak joints, so every generated build is physically constructible.
- **Can I limit it to bricks I already own?** Yes — restrict the colors, the brick sizes, or both; missing parts are listed separately.
- **Can I use my own names for the colors?** Yes — name and group your colors, and the parts list, tooltips and CSV export use those names.
- **What does it cost to build for real?** The parts list gives exact per-color, per-size quantities to price at any brick marketplace.
- **Is it made by the LEGO Group?** No. BrickSolvr is independent, with no connection to any brick brand, and works with generic stud bricks.
## Requirements and limits
- A browser with WebGL and JavaScript enabled. No install, no backend, no account.
- The input must be a 3D model file, not a photo or a flat image — building from a photo is not supported yet (the app offers a waitlist for it, and points to free model sites when a picture is dropped).
- The output is basic stud bricks only: no plates, tiles, slopes or specialty parts.
## Optional

- [Product Hunt](https://www.producthunt.com/products/bricksolvr): the launch listing.
- [Sitemap](https://bricksolvr.com/sitemap.xml): all five pages, with last-modified dates.
