# Quven > Quven is a free self-hosted media server for films, series, music and ebooks, with native apps on nearly every screen and free hardware transcoding. Quven is made by Quven Technologies S.R.L. in Italy and runs on hardware its owner keeps at home: Windows and macOS with a native desktop client, Linux as a server in an AppImage or a signed Docker image, and native apps for iPhone and iPad, for Android phones, tablets and Android TV, and for Fire TV, beside a web client that comes with Pro. Against Plex, Emby or Jellyfin, its free plan includes hardware transcoding and self-configured remote access, turns the picture subtitles of a Blu-ray or DVD into text instead of burning them into the video, and imports watch history and playlists from Plex or Jellyfin. No plan shows advertising. Pro adds the managed relay and a subtitle written from the audio on the owner's server, Max the subtitle editor and translation, and Lifetime is Max for a single payment. Quven is closed-source freeware. Every page below exists in English at the address shown and in Italian under /it. ## Guides - [Control a media server from the command line](https://quven.tv/guides/server-command-line): How to use the quven command on Windows, macOS and Linux to start, stop, check, link and update a Quven server, and where it lives in each package. -
