# ShroomPen
> ShroomPen is a free Chrome extension for writing with AI on the page you are already on. You bring your own API key (BYOK) from OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic or Google Gemini, or point it at an OpenAI-compatible server, including a local model. There is no ShroomPen account, no ShroomPen server in the middle and no extension telemetry: requests go straight from your browser to the provider you chose.
ShroomPen opens as a small overlay on any normal website, such as webmail, Google Docs, LinkedIn, a CMS or a support tool. You write a request, choose which context to attach, read the result, and then copy it, insert it where your cursor is, or replace the text you selected. It never changes a field on its own.
## Key facts
- Price: the extension is free. You pay your AI provider directly for what you use, or run a local model at no cost.
- Providers: OpenRouter (sign in with OpenRouter or paste a key), OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Local servers that speak the OpenAI API, such as Ollama or LM Studio, work without a key. Ollama must first be told to accept the extension with its OLLAMA_ORIGINS setting.
- Browsers: Chrome and other Chromium browsers that install from the Chrome Web Store.
- Opening it: press Ctrl+Q (configurable), click the toolbar button, or right-click and choose "Open ShroomPen".
- Context you can attach, one request at a time: the current page, the text field you are in, selected text, other open tabs (PDF tabs included), and saved Workspaces with your own notes and instructions.
- Consent first: on first use ShroomPen explains what it can read and waits for you to agree. Until then it reads nothing from the page.
- Request preview: you can open the exact request before it is sent, with your API key hidden.
- Sensitive fields: password, one-time code, payment and similar fields are left out of the context. You can switch ShroomPen off for specific sites.
- Storage: provider settings, API keys and any Workspaces you save (notes and saved tab text) stay in the extension's local storage on your device. Recent conversations are kept only for the browser session.
- No ShroomPen account, no hosted model, no ShroomPen generation backend, no ads.
