# yapyap
> A meeting and voice recorder that records, transcribes, identifies speakers,
> and writes up meetings entirely on the user's own computer. No cloud account,
> no meeting bot joining the call, no subscription: €69 once, on macOS, Windows
> and Linux, with a free companion recorder for iOS and Android.
Also written "yap yap" or "yap-yap", and shortened to "yap" or "yapping". Not
the YAPYAP co-op game on Steam, which is an unrelated product.
yapyap is closed source. Recordings are stored as ordinary FLAC and text files
in a folder the user controls, and nothing is uploaded unless they export it
themselves. Where another tool fits better, the comparison pages say so.
## Start here
- [yapyap](https://yap-yap.app/): What yapyap is, what it costs, and what it refuses to do.
- [Pricing](https://yap-yap.app/pricing): €69 once, every update included. No subscription, seat or account.
- [Manifest](https://yap-yap.app/manifest): The promises the product is built against, and what breaks them.
- [Privacy](https://yap-yap.app/privacy): What reaches our servers, which is close to nothing.
## What it does
- [Lenses: turn one recording into any write-up](https://yap-yap.app/lenses): A lens is a way of reading a recording: summary, action list, quotes, or your own format. Write the question once and every later recording answers it too.
- [Yapping, turned into notes you can use](https://yap-yap.app/yapping): Think out loud and get structure back. yapyap records the ramble, transcribes it on your computer, and a lens turns it into a summary, a list, or your format.
- [Transcription that stays on your computer](https://yap-yap.app/transcription): Turn recordings into accurate, searchable text with no upload. Open models like Whisper and Parakeet run on your own hardware, in about a hundred languages.
- [Transcribe about a hundred languages, offline](https://yap-yap.app/languages): yapyap transcribes far beyond English, on your own machine, using open models like Whisper. Pick the language in settings and nothing is ever uploaded.
- [Dictation that runs on your own machine](https://yap-yap.app/dictation): Hold a shortcut in any app, speak, and the words land at your cursor. yapyap transcribes on your own computer, so dictation keeps working offline.
- [Know who said what: speaker names on every line](https://yap-yap.app/speakers): yapyap labels who speaks so you can skim, search, and quote by person, not by a wall of anonymous text. Names can stick across meetings on your computer.
- [A recorder you already own: the yapyap companion app](https://yap-yap.app/companion): yapyap Go turns your phone into a proper voice recorder: one button, works offline, keeps its own library. It sends your takes to your computer for write-ups.
- [Everything stays on your computer, no account](https://yap-yap.app/local): Recording, transcripts, who-spoke labels, and write-ups run on the machine you bought. No account, and nothing bills you for opening your own recordings.
- [No meeting bot: record without a stranger present](https://yap-yap.app/no-bot): yapyap records from your computer or phone. Nothing joins Zoom, Meet, or Teams as a notetaker bot, so clients and sources never see an extra guest.
## How to record
- [How to record](https://yap-yap.app/record): Recording Zoom, Meet, Teams, a room, an interview, or a phone call.
- [Record Zoom meetings: no bot, local notes](https://yap-yap.app/record/zoom): Capture Zoom from your computer without inviting a notetaker bot. Get a searchable transcript and write-ups that stay with you.
- [Record voice notes: talk now, sort it later](https://yap-yap.app/record/voice-notes): Capture a voice note or a full brain dump, get it transcribed on your own computer, and turn the ramble into a summary or an action list you can use.
- [Record Google Meet: local notes, no bot](https://yap-yap.app/record/google-meet): Record Google Meet from your computer without inviting a meeting bot. With yapyap, transcripts and write-ups stay with you.
- [Record Microsoft Teams: no notetaker on the invite](https://yap-yap.app/record/teams): Capture Microsoft Teams meetings from your computer. No bot joins, and transcripts and write-ups stay with you.
- [Record in-person talks: names on every voice](https://yap-yap.app/record/in-person): Capture room conversations with yapyap. See who spoke, search later, and keep everything on your computer. No meeting bot required.
- [Record interviews: clear quotes, private tape](https://yap-yap.app/record/interview): Built for journalists and researchers: named speakers, quote-friendly write-ups, phone capture in the field, with no cloud account needed.
- [Record with your phone: no clip-on gadget](https://yap-yap.app/record/phone): yapyap Go turns the phone you already carry into a standalone recorder. Capture anywhere, then sync and finish write-ups on your computer. No pendant required.
## Compared with other tools
- [yapyap vs other tools](https://yap-yap.app/vs): Side-by-side with ten other tools, and what switching involves.

- [yapyap vs Omi: lenses on recordings vs pendant plugins](https://yap-yap.app/vs/omi): Omi is an open-source wearable with an app marketplace. yapyap uses the phone you own and ships lenses (views of recordings), not chat add-ons on a gadget.

## Glossary
- [Glossary](https://yap-yap.app/glossary): Plain meanings for lens, meeting bot, speaker identity and the rest.
- [What is a lens? | yapyap glossary](https://yap-yap.app/glossary/lens): A lens is a saved way of reading a recording: summary, actions, quotes, or your own format. Learn how lenses help you reuse one meeting many times.
- [What is yapping? | yapyap glossary](https://yap-yap.app/glossary/yapping): Yapping is talking at length, informally, usually before the thought is finished. Here is where the word comes from and how a recorder turns it into text.
- [What is speaker identity? | yapyap glossary](https://yap-yap.app/glossary/speaker-identity): Speaker identity means knowing who speaks on each line, and recognizing them again later. Why named transcripts are easier to use.
- [What is companion capture? | yapyap glossary](https://yap-yap.app/glossary/companion-capture): Companion capture means recording on the phone you already own, with its own app and library. The phone sends takes to your computer for write-ups.
- [What does “on your device” mean? | yapyap glossary](https://yap-yap.app/glossary/local-first): On-your-device software does the real work on your computer or phone. The internet is optional. How yapyap applies that to meetings and interviews.
- [What is a meeting bot? | yapyap glossary](https://yap-yap.app/glossary/meeting-bot): A meeting bot is an automated guest that joins Zoom, Meet, or Teams to record. Why yapyap records from your side instead.
- [Separate mic and call audio | yapyap glossary](https://yap-yap.app/glossary/channel-aware-diarisation): yapyap can keep your microphone and the call’s sound as two separate tracks. That makes “you” vs “them” clearer than mixing everything together first.
## How we write
- [Editorial standards: how yapyap writes about the product](https://yap-yap.app/editorial): How we write marketing and notes about yapyap: where figures come from, how competitors are described, what we will not claim, and when we say we lose.
- [Corrections and updates for yapyap](https://yap-yap.app/corrections): How yapyap updates marketing pages and Notes when the facts change: what gets a dated correction, what is a silent edit, and how to ask us to fix one.
## Notes
- [Notes](https://yap-yap.app/blog): Teardowns, benchmarks and comparisons, including ones we lose.
- [The security page is the first thing to 404](https://yap-yap.app/blog/when-the-recorder-company-is-acquired): Limitless raised $33m, sold to Meta, and gave EU customers fourteen days to export five years of recordings. A timeline, and what to ask any vendor.
- [Write your own lens in an afternoon](https://yap-yap.app/blog/write-your-own-lens-in-an-afternoon): The eight built-in write-ups are not the limit. A lens is a prompt, a schema and a view, all editable in the app — here is the build, mistakes included.
- [Otter's list of the ten best meeting tools begins with Otter](https://yap-yap.app/blog/who-writes-the-best-notetaker-lists): The ranked lists answering “best AI notetaker” are written by the products on them, and they win. Four examples by name, and three questions to ask.
- [One meeting, eight write-ups](https://yap-yap.app/blog/one-meeting-eight-write-ups): One eleven-minute call run through all eight built-in lenses, every output shown in full — including the one that gets it wrong, and why we show it.
- [Your recordings are a folder you can read without us](https://yap-yap.app/blog/what-is-in-the-folder): The vault is a plain directory of FLAC and text files. Put it on iCloud, a NAS or a USB stick, and keep two machines in step with no sync server.
- [Now the toilet has a subscription](https://yap-yap.app/blog/now-the-toilet-has-a-subscription): Casana sells a smart toilet seat for $199, then a monthly bill to keep reading your own blood pressure. The clearest picture of where the rent model ends up.
- [Reading Meetily's Pro tier: $120 a year, one device](https://yap-yap.app/blog/reading-meetilys-pro-tier): Meetily is the best local meeting recorder that is not mine. What Pro costs, what it gates, and how a €69 one-time licence lands differently.
- [What a €69 app has to refuse](https://yap-yap.app/blog/what-a-69-euro-app-has-to-refuse): A price charged once cannot fund an endless roadmap. What yapyap will not build (no video, no team admin, no meeting bot) and what each yes would cost.
- [What €69 once actually buys you](https://yap-yap.app/blog/what-our-licence-actually-promises): The licence behind the price: every update included, two devices, a free week with no account, and what still works when the licence cannot be checked.
- [How journalists record interviews privately](https://yap-yap.app/blog/journalists-recording-interviews-privately): Source protection, consent and transcription for reporters on their own budget: what to record with, what never to upload, and how to keep every copy with you.
- [What happens to your recordings if I disappear](https://yap-yap.app/blog/closed-source-and-the-dead-mans-pledge): yapyap is closed source and built by one person. Here is what keeps working if that person stops, and how to check the privacy claims in ten minutes.
- [Otter vs Granola vs yapyap: which one keeps your data safe](https://yap-yap.app/blog/otter-granola-yapyap-data-safety): Three meeting tools compared on what privacy-conscious people ask: where the recording lives, whether a bot joins, and what happens if the company shuts down.
- [The arithmetic of selling software once](https://yap-yap.app/blog/the-arithmetic-of-selling-software-once): yapyap costs €69 once, every update included. What that price has to cover, why Screen Studio's one-time price collapsed, and why Rogue Amoeba's has not.
- [Record Microsoft Teams without a notetaker bot](https://yap-yap.app/blog/record-teams-without-a-notetaker): Your IT team blocked the bot and the meeting still needs minutes. How to capture Teams from your own computer, and what to say to compliance.
- [How to record a Google Meet without a bot joining the call](https://yap-yap.app/blog/record-google-meet-without-a-bot): Capture a Meet from your own computer, keep the guest list clean, and get the transcript locally. Six steps, plus fixes for headphones and dial-in callers.
- [Why your transcript puts the wrong name on the wrong line](https://yap-yap.app/blog/who-said-that-is-harder-than-what-they-said): Speaker labels are where transcription still goes wrong. Why it happens, what you can do about it in five minutes, and when to stop trusting them.
- [Three free voice apps, and the job each one actually wins](https://yap-yap.app/blog/reading-the-source-of-three-voice-apps): Handy, Verenu and Speakr are free and run on your own machine. We read their source rather than their marketing pages. Here is what each one is for.
- [What a meeting bot is, and why people are banning them](https://yap-yap.app/blog/what-is-a-meeting-bot): The extra guest called "Notetaker" is a real account with a real recording. What it does, why legal and IT teams block them, and how to get notes without one.
- [Do not buy the recorder. Your phone is the microphone](https://yap-yap.app/blog/your-phone-is-already-a-good-microphone): Clip-on AI recorders cost €120 to €200 and duplicate hardware in your pocket. How to use the phone instead, and when a separate recorder still wins.
- [One recording, any write-up: how lenses work](https://yap-yap.app/blog/one-recording-any-view): The same meeting becomes minutes, an action list, a quote sheet and a client brief without you listening to it again. Here is how, and what it costs you.
- [The real cost of cloud transcription over three years](https://yap-yap.app/blog/what-local-transcription-costs): A $100-a-year transcription subscription costs $300 by year three. A local app costs $25 to $250 once. The arithmetic, plus the local bill nobody prints.
- [Local-first transcription tools: nine compared](https://yap-yap.app/blog/local-first-transcription-tools-compared): Nine desktop apps that transcribe on your own machine, what each costs, which profession each suits, and the three where a rival is the better buy than yapyap.
- [Why your meetings should never leave your computer](https://yap-yap.app/blog/why-your-meetings-should-never-leave-your-computer): Uploading a recording hands a copy to a company, its subprocessors and anyone who subpoenas them. What that costs you, and how to record on your own machine.
- [I bought a €120 recorder that needed a subscription](https://yap-yap.app/blog/why-we-built-yapyap): A €120 AI recorder turned out to need an account and a paid plan, and the phone in my pocket already did the job. That is why yapyap exists.
