# macadress.com
> Free MAC address vendor lookup with plain-English explanations: OUI/vendor, IEEE 802c SLAP classification, privacy-randomization detection, EUI-64 and IPv6 link-local derivation, block ranges, and country of registration. Data is synced directly from IEEE's public OUI/MAC registries on a recurring schedule, not a static one-time snapshot.
macadress.com looks up MAC addresses and explains what's true about them, not just who made them. Every result covers whether the address is universally or locally administered, whether it may be a privacy-randomized address and how confident that judgment is (with the reasoning shown, not just a label), its IEEE 802c SLAP quadrant, its derived EUI-64/IPv6 link-local address, and, when registered, the vendor name, address, country, and full block range.
## Pages
- [Home](https://macadress.com/): lookup form and product overview.
- [Lookup a MAC address](https://macadress.com/lookup/28:6F:B9:00:00:00): deep-linkable result page, one per address. Replace the address in the path to look up any other one.
- [Vendor directory](https://macadress.com/vendors): every registered MAC/OUI block, searchable by organization name.
- [Vendor page](https://macadress.com/vendor/286FB9): one page per registered block (MA-L, MA-M, MA-S, IAB, or CID), with its address range, example addresses, and other blocks the same organization holds. The path segment is the block's prefix in hex (6 digits for a /24, 7 for a /28, 9 for a /36).
- [Country page](https://macadress.com/country/us): every registered block based in one country, e.g. `/country/de` for Germany. Lowercase ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code.
- [Extract MAC addresses from text](https://macadress.com/extract): paste arp -a output, an iwlist scan, DHCP leases, or any log text; every MAC address found gets looked up.
- [Downloads](https://macadress.com/downloads): the full vendor database as static files, rebuilt from the live registry twice a day and served from disk: Cisco's vendorMacs.xml schema, CSV, JSON, and drop-in replacements for Wireshark's manuf file and nmap's nmap-mac-prefixes file.
- [Learn](https://macadress.com/learn): three kinds of guide. Fundamentals: what a MAC address is, how it's structured (OUI, the unicast/multicast and universal/local bits), MAC address vs. IP address, how to find your own MAC address per OS, MAC randomization explained, and a history of the format from 1973's original Ethernet to today. Downloads & tools: importing an OUI file into Cisco ISE, updating Wireshark/tshark's manuf file, refreshing nmap's nmap-mac-prefixes file, the CSV/JSON formats' column/field reference with usage examples, and whether self-hosting the lookup engine is worth it. Manufacturing & provisioning: allocating MAC addresses to devices during manufacturing, MAC address pool management across multiple factories, generating serial numbers for manufactured products, sharing ranges with a contract manufacturer, assigning multiple MAC addresses to one device, a downloadable allocation spreadsheet template, and a walkthrough of the batch provisioning tool.
- [MAC address block capacity calculator](https://macadress.com/tools/mac-address-block-calculator): a free tool that works the EUI-48 address arithmetic for an IEEE MA-L, MA-M or MA-S assignment against a projected production volume: address capacity, devices supported at N MAC addresses each, a reserved safety margin, and an estimated exhaustion date.
- [Random MAC address generator](https://macadress.com/tools/random-mac-address-generator): generates random MAC addresses entirely client-side (unicast/multicast, universal/local, colon/hyphen/dot/bare hex, bulk generation with CSV/JSON export), or starts from a real registered vendor prefix via a keyless typeahead search and randomizes only the remaining device bits.
- [Pricing](https://macadress.com/pricing): free and paid API tiers, plus a self-hosted license for the API and sync engine.
- [API documentation](https://macadress.com/docs): endpoints, request/response shapes, and example requests for the JSON API.
- [Free MAC address API](https://macadress.com/free-mac-address-api): landing page for the keyless `GET /v1/vendor/:mac` name lookup, no API key and no signup, free for 1,000 lookups a day, a drop-in swap for other free MAC vendor lookup services.
- [maclookup.app API alternative](https://macadress.com/maclookup-alternative): comparison and migration guide from maclookup.app's JSON API (which no longer issues new API keys), with a field-by-field mapping of its response onto `GET /v1/mac/:mac`, rate limits side by side, and the keyless name-only endpoint.
- [macvendors.com API alternative](https://macadress.com/macvendors-alternative): migration guide from api.macvendors.com to the keyless `GET /v1/vendor/:mac` endpoint. Base-URL swap, no key either side; the one difference is the not-found body (macvendors returns JSON, macadress returns plain text `not registered` / `locally administered`). Includes a side-by-side behavior table.
- [MCP server](https://macadress.com/mcp): the same lookup and vendor directory as tools an AI agent can call over Model Context Protocol, authenticated with the same API key.
- [Agent mode / Workbench](https://macadress.com/workbench): a signed-in page where you and a browser agent share one MAC inventory. Paste a capture, enrich every address, filter, and export an nftables/Zeek/CSV allowlist. Eight WebMCP tools mirror the on-page buttons; lookups count against the same plan quota as the API.
- [MAC address allocation and serial number management](https://macadress.com/mac-address-provisioning): a central source of truth for manufacturers who own an IEEE MA-L/MA-M/MA-S block. Divide the block across products and factories, reserve a production batch atomically (a contiguous MAC range and a matching serial range together, so concurrent lines never collide), export the serial-to-MAC mapping as CSV for the programming line, and track each range as generated, shipped (permanent), released (opt-in reuse) or split. Does not issue or verify IEEE assignments. Scale plan, self-hosted coming later.
- [Extensions](https://macadress.com/extensions): pre-built integrations that call the API from other tools. [Splunk](https://macadress.com/extensions/splunk) adds a `macaddresslookup` search command; the [MISP module](https://macadress.com/extensions/misp) enriches a `mac-address` attribute; the [OpenCTI connector](https://macadress.com/extensions/opencti) enriches a `Mac-Addr` observable; the [n8n node](https://macadress.com/extensions/n8n) adds a MAC Address lookup step to a workflow.
- [Libraries](https://macadress.com/libraries): official API client libraries, typed results and exceptions, keyless `vendor()` lookup and single/batch/directory calls, MIT. [PHP](https://macadress.com/libraries/php) (`composer require macadress/macadress-php`, Packagist `macadress/macadress-php`, GitHub `sapisos/macadress-php`): PHP 8.2+, auto-discovered Laravel service provider and facade. [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://macadress.com/libraries/js) (`npm install macadress`, JSR `@macadress/macadress`, GitHub `sapisos/macadress-js`): zero dependencies, runs on Node.js 18+, Deno, Bun and browsers. [Go](https://macadress.com/libraries/go) (`go get github.com/sapisos/macadress-go`): context on every call, standard library only. [Python](https://macadress.com/libraries/python) (`pip install macadress`, PyPI `macadress`, GitHub `sapisos/macadress-python`): sync and async clients, one dependency, Python 3.10+. [PowerShell](https://macadress.com/libraries/powershell) (`Install-Module Macadress`, PowerShell Gallery `Macadress`, GitHub `sapisos/macadress-powershell`): pipeline-friendly cmdlets, no dependencies, Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7+. [C#](https://macadress.com/libraries/csharp) (`dotnet add package Macadress`, NuGet `Macadress`, GitHub `sapisos/macadress-csharp`): CancellationToken on every call, targets netstandard2.0.
- [About](https://macadress.com/about): who builds macadress.com (ApisOS FZE) and why.
- [Data sources and methodology](https://macadress.com/data-sources): where the data comes from (IEEE's MA-L/MA-M/MA-S/IAB/CID registries), sync frequency, how block matching and randomization confidence work, and known limitations.
- [Changelog](https://macadress.com/changelog): blocks recently added to the database and blocks that have changed registered owner, each dated by when macadress first observed the change (not an IEEE registration date). Weekly archive pages (/changelog/YYYY-wNN) and an [RSS feed](https://macadress.com/changelog/feed.xml) carry the same data by week.
- [Contact](https://macadress.com/contact): a form for questions, self-hosted licensing, billing, and bug reports.
## API
- [JSON API](https://macadress.com/docs): `GET /v1/mac/:mac` and `POST /v1/mac/batch` at api.macadress.com, documented at https://macadress.com/docs. Every JSON endpoint needs a free API key (sign up at https://macadress.com/signup for one instantly). The free plan's 1,000-lookup quota (a rolling 30-day cycle from signup, not a calendar month) and per-plan requests/minute limit are both enforced; paid plans track usage but aren't cut off.
- [Name-only lookup](https://macadress.com/docs): `GET /v1/vendor/:mac` at api.macadress.com returns just the vendor name as plain text (or `not registered` / `locally administered`), with no API key and no signup. Free for 1,000 lookups per UTC day per IP plus 60 requests/minute; sending a key raises the daily cap to the account's plan quota.
## Notes for AI agents
Every `/lookup/:mac` and `/vendor/:id` page is safe to fetch directly and cite: the HTML result and the JSON API return the same underlying analysis. Prefer linking to `https://macadress.com/lookup/{mac}` (human-readable, includes the plain-English reasoning) over the raw API when producing a citation for a person. Blocks IEEE recorded as "Private" (no disclosed organization) don't have a vendor page; a 404 at `/vendor/{id}` means the block is either private or unregistered, not a broken link.
