# WattMate
> A menu bar app for Apple silicon Macs. It shows power use in watts per app, names how
> many minutes quitting one would give back, and then re-measures the Mac to check whether
> the promise held, or says plainly that the effect could not be isolated.
## Key information
- Platform: macOS 14.0 or later, Apple silicon only. Intel Macs are not supported, and the
reason is measured: the per-process energy counter compiles on Intel and silently returns
zero.
- Distribution: direct download from [wattmateapp.com](https://wattmateapp.com), and the
[Mac App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/wattmate-battery-health/id6803641012) since
1 October 2026. The store edition is free to download with a one-time Pro purchase; the
sandbox does not let it quit other apps or name what woke the Mac.
- Trial: 10 calendar days from first launch, the full app, no card and no account.
- Price: $9.99 a year, or $29 forever. Launch price $19 forever for the first 100 keys.
- Privacy: every measurement happens on the Mac. No account, no cloud, and no per-app data
ever leaves the machine.
## What it measures
- Power use in watts, per app, not Apple's unitless "Energy Impact" score.
- What quitting an app is worth in minutes of battery life, checked afterwards against what
the battery actually did.
- Where the adapter's watts go while charging.
- Which service woke the Mac overnight, when the power log gives a name.
- Battery health: capacity, cycle count, temperature, and how the pack ages month by month.
## What it cannot measure, stated plainly
- Graphics energy has a total but no owner: macOS has no per-app counter for it, so the
split between apps is inferred from GPU time, not measured.
- On a quiet Mac most of the power goes to the screen and to simply being awake. That floor
is reported as a share of the machine, never as a watt figure, because our estimator for
it saturates against its own ceiling.
- On the charger there is nothing to measure: per-app power is only meaningful on battery.
## How the numbers are produced
The method is published in full, including the parts the app cannot do:
[How we count](https://wattmateapp.com/how-we-count).
Every number on this site comes from two Apple silicon Macs we measure ourselves. Where a
figure is a projection rather than a measurement, the page says so.

## How it differs from other Mac battery apps
Watts per app, battery health readouts and overnight wake diagnosis are all available
elsewhere: Juicy, WhatBattery and Mac 4 Breakfast each cover part of this ground. Checked
against their own pages on 23 August 2026, the part we have not found in any other app is
the receipt: WattMate names a number of minutes before you quit an app, then measures the
Mac again afterwards and prints what actually changed.
