# StepGrab > StepGrab captures a screenshot at every click and turns any workflow into a numbered, annotated step-by-step guide (SOP), exported as PDF, HTML, Markdown, GIF or MP4. It is a native Mac app, and StepGrab for Windows comes from the Microsoft Store. Capture works offline, screenshots and guides stay on your computer, and no StepGrab account is required. ## Key facts - Platform: macOS 14 or later (native; Apple Silicon and Intel), from the Mac App Store. StepGrab for Windows runs on Windows 10 (22H2) or Windows 11 on 64-bit (x64 or ARM64) PCs and comes from the Microsoft Store, which also delivers its updates: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9PGXWH0DCHGJ. Pro for Windows is unlocked with a license key bought on stepgrab.net. All downloads: https://stepgrab.net/download.html - Languages: StepGrab for Mac and StepGrab for Windows are both available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. - Permissions: on the Mac, StepGrab needs Screen Recording permission. Input Monitoring is optional (it turns keyboard shortcuts into steps). StepGrab for Windows needs no special permission. - What it does: records a screenshot on every click and auto-builds a numbered, annotated step-by-step guide; captures the exact window, menus, and dropdowns, including modifier clicks and keyboard shortcuts. - Exports: PDF, HTML (one self-contained file), Markdown, GIF, MP4, and a mobile format. GIF is available on the free plan; the rest require Pro. - Project files: the Mac App Store currently has StepGrab 1.5.1, which saves a project as a folder. From StepGrab for Mac 1.6, the next update (not released yet), a .stepgrab project is a single file. StepGrab for Windows opens projects saved by StepGrab for Mac 1.6 or later. - Burn in redactions (Mac, coming in the next update, version 1.6): project files keep the original, unredacted screenshots, so share exports rather than projects when they show private data. With 1.6, turning on "Burn in redactions" in File › Save As saves a copy with the redaction boxes burned into the images and without the originals, so the recipient cannot undo the redaction. - Privacy: capture works offline, and screenshots and guides stay on your Mac or PC. There is no StepGrab account and no sign-in; buying Pro on stepgrab.net only needs an email address for the receipt and license key. The Mac App Store version makes no network requests of its own; purchases go through Apple. StepGrab for Windows only goes online to activate or check the license key; its updates come through the Microsoft Store. Neither sends screenshots or guides. - Free plan: no time limit. Unlimited guides with up to 15 steps each, GIF export with a small StepGrab mark, no account. The same on Mac and Windows. - Pro adds: up to 500 steps per guide; PDF, MP4, HTML, Markdown and mobile export; step text and captions in exports; a guide language for each guide; AI text on macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence; brand profiles and your own logo. StepGrab for Windows has the same Pro features except AI text. AI text is not available on Windows. - Pricing (USD): Pro $2.99/month or $12.99/year, each with a 3-day free trial, or Lifetime $44.99 (one payment, no expiry, no trial). The same plans and prices apply on Mac and Windows. Current prices: https://stepgrab.net/#pricing - Buying Pro in the Mac App Store version: in-app purchase through Apple in Settings › Pro; purchases are restored there. All Pro plans bought in the Mac App Store include Family Sharing (up to five family members). - Buying Pro on stepgrab.net: plans, prices and terms are on the homepage, https://stepgrab.net/#pricing. Checkout by Lemon Squeezy, the merchant of record (payment, VAT or sales tax, invoices, refunds). Prices include VAT or sales tax. Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal. Every plan comes with one license key by email. The key unlocks Pro in StepGrab for Windows, on up to 2 devices in total. On Mac, Pro is bought inside the Mac App Store version. Activate it in Settings › Pro › Enter license key (the device must be online once); choosing "Deactivate This PC" in Settings › Pro frees an activation. Lifetime is never checked again after activation; subscriptions are re-checked about every 14 days and keep Pro working offline for up to 45 days. - Not transferable: Pro bought in the Mac App Store stays with the App Store version. It comes without a license key, so it does not unlock StepGrab for Windows. A license key from stepgrab.net does not unlock the App Store version either. - Best for: SOPs, onboarding docs, IT/help-desk how-tos, customer support guides, and personal Mac tutorials. ## Download and pricing - [Downloads](https://stepgrab.net/download.html): StepGrab for Mac (Mac App Store) and StepGrab for Windows (Microsoft Store), with system requirements and short install steps. - [Pricing](https://stepgrab.net/#pricing): The free plan and the Pro plans (monthly, yearly, Lifetime) on the homepage, with checkout by Lemon Squeezy for buying direct (a license key for StepGrab for Windows). In the Mac App Store version, Pro is bought inside the app. ## Comparisons - [StepGrab vs Scribe / Tango on Mac](https://stepgrab.net/scribe-tango-alternative.html): A native Mac alternative to Scribe and Tango, with no browser extension and no cloud upload. - [Loom alternative for step-by-step docs on Mac](https://stepgrab.net/loom-alternative.html): Loom records a video walkthrough; StepGrab turns clicks into a written step-by-step guide with screenshots. - [StepGrab vs Snagit on Mac](https://stepgrab.net/snagit-alternative-mac.html): Automatic step-by-step guides, screen capture, exports and pricing compared. - [StepGrab vs Folge](https://stepgrab.net/folge-alternative.html): Platforms, data handling, export formats and pricing compared. - [StepGrab vs Guidde](https://stepgrab.net/guidde-alternative.html): Guidde's cloud AI video docs compared with StepGrab's native screenshot guides. - [StepGrab vs iorad](https://stepgrab.net/iorad-alternative.html): A native Mac app compared with iorad's cloud-based interactive tutorial platform. - [StepGrab vs ScreenSteps](https://stepgrab.net/screensteps-alternative.html): A native guide maker for one person compared with ScreenSteps' cloud knowledge base for teams. ## Mac how-to guides - [Change the Language of One App on a Mac (e.g. Word)](https://stepgrab.net/guides/change-app-language-mac.html): Run Word — or any app — in a different language than the rest of your Mac. - [Change the Default Browser on a Mac](https://stepgrab.net/guides/change-default-browser-mac.html): Make Chrome, Firefox, or any browser open your links by default. - [Change Where Screenshots Are Saved on a Mac](https://stepgrab.net/guides/change-screenshot-location-mac.html): Stop cluttering your Desktop — pick any folder, no Terminal needed. - [Allow Screen Recording Permission on a Mac](https://stepgrab.net/guides/allow-screen-recording-permission-mac.html): Grant an app Screen Recording access in Privacy & Security. - [Set Up Out-of-Office in Outlook on a Mac](https://stepgrab.net/guides/outlook-out-of-office-mac.html): Automatic replies for internal and external senders. - [Create an Email Signature in Apple Mail](https://stepgrab.net/guides/email-signature-mac.html): Set up and assign signatures per account. - [Create a Drop-Down List in Excel on a Mac](https://stepgrab.net/guides/excel-dropdown-list-mac.html): Add selectable options to cells with Data Validation. - [Select a Subject in Affinity on a Mac](https://stepgrab.net/guides/affinity-select-subject-mac.html): Install the segmentation model and cut out a subject with Affinity's Object Selection Tool. - [Compress a PDF on a Mac Without Extra Software](https://stepgrab.net/guides/compress-pdf-mac.html): Shrink an oversized PDF with Preview's built-in Reduce File Size filter. - [Mail Merge in Word for Mac Using an Excel List](https://stepgrab.net/guides/mail-merge-word-mac.html): Turn one letter and a spreadsheet into personalised letters for every recipient. ## SOP examples - [Microsoft Word Document Review Workflow](https://stepgrab.net/examples/microsoft-word-review.html): Standardize how your team reviews, comments on, and signs off documents in Microsoft Word on Mac. - [Microsoft Outlook Signature & Rules Setup](https://stepgrab.net/examples/microsoft-outlook-signature.html): Document how to configure signatures, folders, and email rules in Outlook for Mac. - [Microsoft Teams Meeting Setup SOP](https://stepgrab.net/examples/microsoft-teams-meeting-setup.html): Capture the repeatable steps for creating, configuring, and sharing Teams meetings with the right settings. - [Google Chrome Cache & Cookie Reset](https://stepgrab.net/examples/google-chrome-cache-reset.html): Create a support-ready SOP for clearing cache, cookies, and saved browser state in Chrome on Mac. ## Optional - [StepGrab homepage](https://stepgrab.net): Features, screenshots, and pricing. - [Templates](https://stepgrab.net/templates.html): Ready-made SOP templates. - [Help](https://stepgrab.net/help.html): Setup and usage help, licenses and StepGrab for Windows. - [Roadmap](https://stepgrab.net/roadmap.html): What's shipping next.
