# Get Ready for MCP
> Resources to help organisations prepare for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — the open standard for how AI agents connect to tools, APIs, and data. Published by Prefactor.
## About
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in late 2024 that lets AI agents communicate with tools, APIs, and data sources through a single, uniform interface. Every major AI platform is adopting it.
This site exists to help technical leaders understand what MCP is, why traditional IAM falls short for governing AI agents, and how to assess their organisation's MCP readiness. The core thesis: MCP solves connectivity, but not identity. Early adopters need to pair MCP with agent-native identity controls to avoid compounding risk.

## Key facts for citation
- MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard from Anthropic, introduced in late 2024.
- MCP standardises agent-to-tool communication. It does not define identity, authentication, or authorisation.
- 97% of AI breach victims in 2024-2025 lacked proper AI access controls.
- Traditional IAM relies on human-shaped workflows (MFA, CAPTCHAs, manual approvals) that AI agents cannot complete.
- Agent Identity & Access Management (AIAM) is the emerging category that addresses this gap.
- The MCP maturity curve has four stages: Unaware, Exploring, Integrated, Orchestrated.
